Weekend Vibes: Rolling Over the “Slope to Slope” Trail

This past weekend, I pointed the Bronco toward the “Slope to Slope” trail — a scenic backcountry route that winds its way through some of the most underrated terrain in northern New Mexico. And let me tell you… it did not disappoint.

From the moment my tires hit dirt, I was greeted by that satisfying crunch of gravel under tread and the scent of sun-warmed pine needles. The route dances between elevations, cutting through rolling meadows, whispering aspen groves, and the kind of switchbacks that make you smile instead of sweat.

The air? Crisp. The views? Endless. The traffic? Nearly nonexistent.

I had the rooftop tent tucked tight, awning packed, and my fridge humming with snacks and cold drinks. This was exactly what a trail day should be — a slow roll through nature’s playground, with just enough challenge to keep things fun and far from boring.

What stood out most was the contrast. One moment I was coasting along a ridge with panoramic views of the valley, and the next I was ducking beneath a shaded canopy where the light filtered through like golden lace. The name “Slope to Slope” fits — this trail feels like a conversation between two sides of the land, and you’re lucky enough to be part of it.

By the time I found the perfect pull-off spot to camp, the sun was dipping low, casting a warm glow on the dust-covered rig. I fired up dinner, kicked back under the awning, and watched the stars punch through the indigo sky one by one.

If you’re looking for a trail that feeds the soul without rattling your bones — this is it. It’s the kind of ride that reminds you why we chase the horizon in the first place.
